Wedding Ceremoies and Venues
Greek Orthodox Wedding Procedures

AghiaMarinaChapelAll Greek Orthodox churches are beautiful. Some are at the tops of hills, whilst others are close to the sea. Some are so small that the ceremonies have to be conducted outside in the church courtyards. Whichever church you choose for your ceremony though, it will be a magical moment filled with ancient customs and traditions.

The ceremony will be performed by a Greek Orthodox priest and accompanied by church chanters.

There is an English-speaking Orthodox priest available for those who are not fluent in Greek or who would like the ceremony in both languages for mixed parties.

An Orthodox Greek Wedding takes about 1½ hours, and photographs will be taken throughout the service and afterwards, outside the church.

Greek stephania (wedding crowns), lambades (wedding candles) and bombonieres are essentials, plus any additional flowers to decorate the church.

The following documents are required:

  • Valid 10-year passport each and a legalised photocopy
  • A full-length birth certificate and legalised photocopy.
  • Certificate of No Impediment from Parish Priest(see below).
  • Baptism certificates(s).

To be able to have an Orthodox wedding ceremony one of you must be baptised into the Orthodox religion and the other partner must be a Christian.

Before a confirmed date can be given a Certificate of No Impediment will need to be completed with your local Orthodox Priest and sent to the Bishop of Kefalonia. Once his permission has been granted, the rest of the wedding procedures can commence.

Don’t forget that we offer a comprehensive Documentation Translation Service.
